Full Body Checkup in Nigeria: Your Guide to an Annual Health Check
A full-body medical checkup (also called an annual health check) is a preventive health screening that helps detect silent conditions and non-communicable diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, anaemia, kidney problems, and infections before symptoms appear.
In Nigeria, many people only visit hospitals when they feel sick. But regular medical checkups can prevent serious illness, reduce treatment costs, and help you stay healthy long-term.
What Is a Full Body Checkup?
A full-body medical checkup is a comprehensive health screening designed and conducted by healthcare professionals to identify potential health issues early, even before symptoms appear. Think of it as routine maintenance for your body, similar to servicing your car to keep it running smoothly.
While preventive healthcare is gaining popularity worldwide, it's still relatively new in Nigeria. At EHA Clinics, we're committed to making preventive healthcare accessible and affordable across Abuja, Lagos, and Kano.
Key Benefits:
- Early detection of health issues increases treatment success rates
- Provides peace of mind and reassurance about your health status
- Helps you take control of your wellbeing proactively
- Establishes baseline health metrics to track over time
- Potentially saves lives through early intervention
- Reduces long-term healthcare costs by preventing complications
Why You Need a Medical Checkup Even If You Feel Healthy
Many serious health conditions develop silently without obvious symptoms in their early stages. Conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, hepatitis, and even certain cancers can progress for years before causing noticeable symptoms.
By the time you 'feel sick,' these conditions may have already caused significant damage to your organs. This is why waiting until you feel unwell is a dangerous approach to healthcare.
At EHA Clinics, we prioritize prevention over cure. A medical checkup acts as your early warning system, catching potential problems when they're most manageable and treatable.
Common Silent Conditions Detected During the EHA Annual Health Check:
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Diabetes and pre-diabetes
- High cholesterol
- Thyroid problems
- Liver and kidney problems
- Anaemia and blood disorders
- Urinary tract infections
- HIV infection
- Hepatitis C
- Vision and dental issues
Depending on your age, gender, and risk factors, your doctor may also recommend extra tests, such as an ECG, ultrasound, PSA, Pap smear, mammogram or colonoscopy. See the section on extra tests below.

Who Should Do a Full Body Medical Checkup?
The simple answer: Everyone.
From young children to seniors, everyone benefits from regular health screenings. The specific tests vary based on your age, gender, family history, and lifestyle factors.
You Should Definitely Get a Medical Checkup If You:
- Are 18 years or older (adults should get checked annually)
- Have a family history of diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease
- Are overweight or obese
- Lead a sedentary lifestyle or work long hours
- Experience high stress levels
- Smoke or consume alcohol regularly
- Haven't had a medical checkup in over a year
- Are planning to start an exercise program
- Want peace of mind about your health status
For Children:
Many parents don't realize that children also benefit from regular health checks. Childhood obesity is on the rise in Nigeria. Early detection of issues like anaemia, poor eyesight, dental problems, or abnormal growth patterns can make a significant difference in a child's development and quality of life.
What Happens During Your Visit:
Step 1 – Wellness Consultation (30–45 minutes): A doctor will conduct a thorough physical examination and discuss any health concerns you have. Women also have a clinical breast examination, and men are advised to have a testicular examination. This is your opportunity to ask questions about your health.
Step 2 – Laboratory Tests (15–30 minutes): Blood and urine samples will be taken for your complete blood count, fasting lipid profile, fasting blood sugar, HbA1c, urinalysis, HIV and Hepatitis C tests, and kidney and liver function tests. Women also have a thyroid (TSH) test.
Step 3 – Eye Check and Scaling and Polishing (30–60 minutes): You will see an optometrist for your routine eye check, and your teeth will be professionally cleaned.
Step 4 – Results and Follow-up: Once all tests are completed, your doctor will review the results with you, explain what they mean, and provide recommendations for maintaining or improving your health. Your Annual Health Check also includes a follow-up consultation within two weeks.
Total Time: Plan for approximately 3-4 hours for a comprehensive medical checkup, including all consultations and tests.
The Power of Early Detection
When you complete your medical checkup and receive a clean bill of health, it's more than just good news. It's reassurance that allows you to live with confidence. You can plan for the future, focus on your goals, and enjoy life knowing that you're taking active steps to protect your health.
And if any issues are detected? Early detection dramatically improves treatment outcomes. Many conditions that would be serious if left untreated for years can be managed effectively when caught early.
Think of it this way: you wouldn't wait for your car to break down completely before checking the oil or the brakes. Why treat your body any differently?

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I do a medical checkup?
Adults should do a full-body medical checkup at least once a year. If you have existing health conditions, a family history of chronic diseases, or your doctor recommends more frequent monitoring, you may need checkups every 6 months.
I'm young and healthy. Do I really need this?
Yes! Many chronic conditions develop silently over the years. Starting regular medical checkups while you're young establishes baseline metrics and helps detect any changes early. Plus, lifestyle factors like stress, diet, and work pressure affect everyone, regardless of age. Prevention is always better and cheaper than treatment.
Can I eat or drink before my medical checkup?
No. For adult checks, you must fast for 10–12 hours before your appointment to ensure accurate blood test results, especially for fasting blood sugar and the lipid profile. Water is allowed and encouraged. We recommend scheduling your appointment for the morning so you can eat immediately afterwards.
What's the difference between being an EHA Clinics member and a non-member?
Members pay less for every health check and enjoy extra benefits all year round. The Standard adult membership costs ₦65,000 a year, or ₦6,500 a month when paid online. The Premium adult membership costs ₦100,000 a year and also includes 12 free home care services a year. Youth memberships cost ₦50,000 (Standard) or ₦85,000 (Premium) a year, and the Standard youth plan can be paid at ₦5,000 a month online.
What tests are not included in the Annual Health Check?
Extra tests such as ECG, ultrasound, Pap smear (liquid based cytology), mammogram, colonoscopy, PSA, Hepatitis B tests, genotype, blood group and vaccines are not part of the core package. They are added only when your doctor recommends them, and they are billed separately.
Is the Annual Health Check the same for men and women?
The core tests are almost the same. Women also get a clinical breast examination and a scan, while men are advised to have a testicular examination. The extra tests your doctor may recommend also differ by gender and age; for example, mammograms and Pap smears for women and PSA for men.
How long does a medical checkup take?
Plan for approximately 3–4 hours for a comprehensive medical checkup, including all consultations and tests. We strive to make the process as efficient and comfortable as possible while ensuring thorough care.
What if something abnormal is found during my checkup?
Our doctors will discuss any findings with you immediately and develop a treatment or management plan. Early detection is the goal because it dramatically improves outcomes.
